Spring Break April 4-10

I am going to Vegas and Six Flags yay!!

Field Experience #3

What? This week we taught our lesson plan that we integrated technology into it. We also spoke with the technology advisor to find out more information about the technology being used in the school.

So what? We are doing our unit on the Pioneers. We gave a lesson on how the pioneers have affected Utah today. So we made a PowerPoint using google.docs to show primary source pictures of pioneers back then. We also compared them to similar pictures of today and how things have changed. My students really responding to this activity. They really made the connection that only technology could have given them.

My whole class got engaged in comparing and contrasting the pictures shown. They stayed interested though the whole show. This just shows me how effective technology is. I know that as a teacher whenever possible I want to include technology into my lessons.

Now what? Seeing how effective this way of teaching is, I want to convince my colleagues to try and use the same method of teaching. I think this school definitely needs to include more technology. After speaking with the technology assistant we could see that they do have resources the teachers just need to use them.

I know that for my students to learn they need to be engaged and for that to happen they need to be interested. The best way to make them interested is to relate to them and they are at the age of technology. I so I am going to try to integrate technology all the time.

Video Reflection: Cyber Sumit on 21st Century Skills: Kanas Technology Rich Classroom Project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu99aC8YK4Y
The school talks about how using technology in the classroom has been very effective for them. This is just shining more light on the facts that technology is a really great way to get through to students and have them learn the material in a fun and interesting way.

Field Experience #2

What? So this week of field, my partner and I, taught Monday thru Thursday of this week. We are teaching a unit about the Mormon Pioneers.

So what? Field is all hands on experience. I don't think their is really a better way to learn to be a successful teacher than practicing like this. On Monday we had to go over religion which was hard. We taught it straight from the book so as to not preach about it. We also had our field supervisor come and watch us that day. It wasn't the most amazing lesson ever because we were walking a line but I felt we did okay. The next couple of days have been much better. Our lesson plans were awesome and the students have really enjoyed themselves.

We are teaching a technology integrated lesson next week but I have been still observing for technology used in the classroom. Our cooperating teacher used a overhead projector the other day to show pictures of the Holocaust because they are reading Number the Stars. It was a great way for the students to make that emotional connection and visualize pictures that make the story real. Other than their computer rotation once a week they don't get much technology.

Now what? If this class is that technology can really enliven a lesson. Field has taught me that technology is not really used in the classroom still. When I become a teacher I hope I have the resources to use technology in my class frequently.

I think that is I am a good example and use technology in a effective way for my students, my colleagues and department will see how useful technology can be a start using it in their classrooms too. I know my students will get a kick out of it because they use technology everyday in their lives, why not use it at school? Students can learn a lot through technology and it is something they will use for years to come.

Video Reflection: Next Generation Learning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dBT9mmizL8
This video is about exactly what its called. This generation is now learning through technology. It was basically an overview of ways technology is not being used in the classroom. This class being showed was a little advanced. It will be interesting to see if they have that kind of technology in my classroom when I become a teacher.

Field Experience #1

What? I started my field experience this week. I am working with the 4th grade. My field partner and I decided that we wanted to observe our first week so we could get a feel of the classroom before teaching.

So what? I know that this experience will be very beneficial to me as a teacher. I know that it already is as a student. My class is very quiet. I think this is because my teacher has excellent classroom management. I don't really know any major behavior problems within her classroom. My teacher speaks with a very quiet voice and all of her students respect her.

Although the class is very well put together, I feel like there is too much quiet time. There is not a lot of group collaboration going on within the classroom, where the kids can let loose a bit and have some fun. I think that technology could be just the key for something like this. We could make a webquest where the class can work together in groups. Through this they can have fun using technology.

Now what? One thing I have notice is that the class doesn't use technology really at all. Every day all of the 4th grade class split into groups and rotate among the library, the computer lab, music, and PE. This is really the only chance the students have to work with technology, on the day they happen to have computer lab. I think that rotations is a great idea but I think that as a future teacher I can learn to incorporate more technology into my classroom.

This semester has taught me one thing that there is so much you have do to include technology. My students can learn a lot by making a movie for the class to teach their fellow students about something. I know that my department and colleagues will appreciate my ideas on this matter and hopefully start including more technology into their classrooms. As a teacher I want to make a difference, to stand out, to really get through to my students. I know that technology can be a big help to head in that direction.

Video Reflection: Do you teach or do you educate?
This video is to get teachers thinking about how they teach. The video starts off with giving the definition to teach. It says
  1. to explain or teach how to do something.
  2. to encourage someone to accept a fact
  3. to give information or instruction in something
  4. cause someone to learn or understand something
  5. induce by example or punishment to do or to not do something

Then it ask if you are an educator someone who,

  • illuminate
  • enlighten
  • inspire
  • empower

Educator: one who gives intellectual, moral, and social instruction.

Mentor: an experienced and trusted advisor.

Guide: a person who advises and shows the way.

Education make a people easy to lead but difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible to enslave- Peter Brougham

This video really gets you thinking about the responsibilities you have as an educator. There is so much more to being a teacher than standing in front of a class all day. It is important to remember our goal as teachers and what it really means to be a teacher in the long run.

Digital Story 1

What? This week we learned what Digital Stories are. They are short films that tell a story. It now our job to create one for our class.

So What? As a teacher I can use digital stories as an interesting way to teach my students something. As a student I can learn to create something expressive to help my future students. As a colleague my fellow colleagues can use my stories and example to help their students. I can use digital stories in my other classes to prove that I have a great way to hook my students into a certain subject.

I am very excited to try out this new technology because I have never made a digital story before. I personally love movies so I know as a student I would have really gained from this. I can really capture my students and fellow colleagues by expressing the subject I am going to teach through the art of film making.

Now What? My future students will an emotional view of our next topic in class. I want them to be interested in learning so that they will open their minds to what I am going to teach them. Once I have their attention, which hopefully the digital story will do, I am really get them involved in learning.

I think this will make me a better teacher because I am teaching everyone because a digital story will be helpful to visual and oral learners. I could also have my students make a digital story to prove that they really understand the subject and they can teach their fellow students. My colleagues and my department will how dedicated I am to teaching and they will hopefully follow my suit.

Video Reflection: This video was on a digital story of Nasa. I thought whoever made it did an excellent job. It was very well proportioned. There was enough narration and sound clips. It was also very imformative! I can't wait to try one out!

WebQuest Final Fixes & Podcasts/Vidcasts

What? This week we are finishing up on our WebQuest. We also are now working making vidcast and podcast. We need to teach something through both of these methods.

So What? I am excited about my WebQuest it is finally coming all together. I think my students could really like an activity like this one. I know that as a student I am really getting the hang of making these and it is improving my PowerPoint skills.

Podcast and Vidcast are extremely useful ways to teach. Students cans still be taught even if you are not there. Students can expand their knowledge through either method. A Podcast is a tool that allows you to hear something through a computer, ipod, etc. A Vidcast is another tool that allows you to see something through a computer, camera, etc. I think it would be useful as a teacher to utilize these tools and make things a bit easier or more interesting for my students. I could had my student do an assignment through a vidcast. My students could collaborate make a movie, teach the class something. I think I could become a better teacher by using these tools so that if my students need more information they can find out more through these tools. For example if I am sick one day I could make a podcast for my class.

Now What? I never thought about using these simply tools that I use daily to incorporate them into my class. I think by my example my colleagues can see what that is better to teach a students something several different ways so that they can understand it because everybody learns differently. I really want to be the best teacher I can be. I know that I feel I didn't get a good foundation in a lot of subjects like math because they teachers were explaining it in a way I didn't understand. This way I know I get the concept out because they can see it, hear it, do it.

I really want to be a good teacher. I think my department will like the extra mile I go through using podcast and vidcast to make sure my students don't miss anything. I think they could start making some for the whole school. Maybe a vidcast to show our school pride? I am very excited to utilize these tools in my classroom someday.

Video Reflection: It was on why should we let our students blog. The video suggested to teach communication, literacy, ownership, sharing, collaboration, discussion, empowerment, interaction, motivation, participation, engagement, excitement, conversation, creativity, reflection, to extend the walls of the classroom, to give students a 'voice' and a 'audience', to students a learning environment that is open 24/7, to give them skills useful for their digital futures. Basically it if we think our students can write to learn, they can blog to learn. To see this video go to: http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=838&title=Why_Let_our_Students_Blog_
